- Blurts out answers without waiting to be called on hear the whole question
- Has difficulty waiting for his or her turn
- Often interrupts others
- Intrudes on other people’s conversations or games
- Inability to keep powerful emotions in check, resulting in angry outbursts or temper tantrums
Positive effects of ADD & ADHD in children
- Creativity – Children who have ADD / ADHD can be marvelously creative and imaginative. The child who daydreams and has ten different thoughts at once can become a master problem-solver, a fountain of ideas, or an inventive artist. Children with ADD may be easily distracted, but sometimes they notice what others don’t see.
- Flexibility – Because children with ADD / ADHD consider a lot of options at once, they don’t become set on one alternative early on and are more open to different ideas.
- Enthusiasm and spontaneity – Children with ADD / ADHD are rarely boring! They’re interested in a lot of different things and have lively personalities. In short, if they’re not exasperating you (and sometimes even when they are), they’re a lot of fun to be with.
- Energy and drive – When kids with ADD / ADHD are motivated, they work or play hard and strive to succeed. It actually may be difficult to distract them from a task that interests them, especially if the activity is interactive or hands-on.
Keep in mind, too, that ADD/ADHD has nothing to do with intelligence or talent. Many children with ADD/ADHD are intellectually or artistically gifted.
We have already established that ADHD isn’t necessarily a bad thing, in fact, if we can manage the problem correctly, it can even be a good thing. So we are now seeing a Psychologist and working on a structure to better manage Rayner or his future outburst of emotions. You must be asking why suddenly ADHD now….he was okay all these while….Rayner probably has been exhibiting all these symptons since young and ever since starting Primary school, these problem areas are very much highlighted in bold especially so when he is now studying in a neighbour hood school. He has boundless and never ending energy. So much so that he is too much for his Mother Tongue Teacher to handle and the teacher in turn keeps calling me to complain about him. Luckily for us, Rayner’s P2 form teacher Mrs Alice Wee is a very experienced and patience teacher. She totally knows how to keep in under control and how to work with kids like him. Cross my fingers and toes, so far so good, she has been keeping him under control.
Then the little one….both her child care teacher and I have noticed that she is still writing some alphabets and numbers in a mirror image. We first came to realize she has this problem when she was 4 plus but thought she would eventually correct herself like most kids. But no, she is coming 6 this year and she is still writing mirror images of letters and numbers and this is starting to get pretty worrying.
Some say maybe she is Dyslexia and some say maybe Learning disability.
There are times an online High School program can be a good choice for your child. If your child is not offered a challenging curriculum at their local public school nor has difficulty keeping up the pace at the local public school; online high school may be a good alternative. There are both public (charter) and private online high Schools. You and your student should be prepared to do extensive research to find one that meets your student’s needs and future career goals.
Most online high school programs; like most private schools are somewhat exempted from government regulation. They set their own admission and graduation requirements. Some are accredited by private or church related organizations .These schools differ in what the value of their accreditation really means. You should look for schools that have regional accreditation from organizations that accredited brick and mortar schools and not just online programs.
You must also check the accreditation with your state's board of education. I would also advise that your child check the acceptability of an online school, they plan to attend with schools and vocational programs they may plan to deal with after high school. The military can be very choosy about the online diplomas accept as are most state\ colleges.
You need to inquire from the organizations that your child plans to involve themselves with after graduation. Do not take the online school's word about the acceptability of their diplomas. If you are not sure what type of college your child wishes to attend you can ask the online school for the names of Universities and trade schools that have accepted their online diplomas. You will need to check with the individual universities and school the online school has said accepts their diplomas just to be on the safe side. You do not want your child to study for four years only to find they have a basically useless diploma.
There are many online High School programs associated with online career schools .if you think that these will help meet your child's post graduation goals; these schools are some of the most reasonably priced for both your child's high school and post high school education. Be aware these policies of these school's vary a great deal in regards to accepting credits from other schools. Some will accept no transfer credits and wish your student to use their program start to finish when students are earning a diploma. Others charge a fee for credits transferred from another school. Many brick and mortar schools also do not accept credits from online high schools. This will most likely change as more and more students begin taking classes on line. If your student is only and attending online school to gain a few credits I would ask the brick and mortar school what online credits they will accept. This should be done before any online credits are paid for.
Most online high schools are not as expensive as private schools, but because you are solely responsible for text books and software for your student the costs can add up. You must be careful of diploma mills that for a low price will have your student take a test and issue a diploma. These diplomas are not worth the paper they are written on and are not equivalent to your state's GED. It takes time to finish high school in the real world and legitimate online schools require you invest time for a diploma
You should check if your state offers an online public school. Most of these schools have a very short enrollment window but you do not have to worry about accreditation, transfer of credits, or high tuition costs. These schools can also accommodate learning disabled and gifted students in way many online programs cannot. Most of the online schools can be found under a list of charter schools for your community. Many provide a computer if needed besides textbooks and lab supplies.
Online schools will improve in the future as more and more students take advantage of the opportunity for distance learning that the Internet offers. In the mean time planning to attend online high school is a process that requires much thought for both you and the student. The transition from real time classroom to an online classroom is one that most computer savvy students make easily. Making sure that they are receiving a quality on line education is something that parents need to take charge of.
