College Graduation Gift Idea

When you know someone graduating from high school, it can be a very intense period of time. It can be a really busy time with lots of plans to be made. It is important to congratulate the graduate with a gift of some sort. Sometimes it can be hard to think of what an appropriate graduation gift is. One idea is to get the individual a refurbished computer. A used computer is a practical gift for someone who is either about to enter the workforce or go on to higher education; and because it isn’t brand new, it won’t be nearly as expensive. If the graduate already has a laptop, there are lots of other gift ideas.

If the graduate is college-bound, an interesting gift idea is to put together a dorm life kit. You could purchase a laundry basket and fill it with all of the items that are important for the first year of college. Some ideas for the basket are quarters for laundry, ramen noodles and macaroni and cheese, flip flops, bath robe, and other items. This is a cute and creative way to give a practical gift that will prepare the individual for the next year.

Sending the individual on a trip is an amazing idea for a gift. Travelling after high school is a very popular thing to do. It is good beforehand to discuss the financial aspects of it along with the individual’s wishes. Paying for a part of the trip, or buying the plane ticket to where ever it is that they want to go is a thoughtful gift for graduation. Another option is if the graduate is going on a trip with the senior class or has already paid for the trip in some format, you could buy the person some items he or she would need for the trip. You could buy them a passport holder, a translation book for the language spoken in the area, a travel guide, a calling card to reach home, and a number of other items.

If you are really stumped on a gift idea, you could always offer to help pay for a party to celebrate the graduation. A graduation party can seem like a very expensive endeavor, but there are thrifty ways of making it happen. By having the party at your house and providing the food, there is barely any cost. Creating a loving celebration can be fairly easy.

A monetary gift is an appropriate gift if you decide there is nothing you want to purchase for the individual. If you take the time to write a heartfelt card or letter, the money won’t even be the real gift. Though many people think money is not a great gift, for an individual who is about to have to budget a lot and be smart about spending, extra money is never a bad thing.

Whether the high school graduate is headed to college or to the working world, he or she will appreciate graduation gifts that are both useful and personal. Any gift can be made more special with the inclusion of a card that lets the graduate know how much he or she means to the giver.

Books to Give

Gift books for graduates can range from practical to sentimental. One favorite for graduates is the Dr. Seuss classic, Oh the Places You’ll Go, which offers inspiration mixed with whimsey.

Teens headed to college may appreciate a good dictionary and thesaurus. If their college is in another state, a guidebook to the area may prove useful.

Graduates setting up their first apartment could benefit from a basic cookbook such as The Starving Student’s Cookbook (Grand Central Publishing, 2002) by Dede Hall or Betty Crocker’s Cooking Basics (Betty Crocker, 2008). And every student on his own for the first time could benefit from a basic finance book such as Got Money? (AMACOM, 1999) by Jeff Wuorio or Suze Orman’s The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous and Broke (Riverhead Trade, 2007).

Travel Gifts

Many seniors take a trip after graduation. Whether the getaway is a weekend at the beach or a summer in Europe, luggage is a practical graduation gift. The graduate can use a good set of luggage to move belongings to a college dorm or first apartment and for trips back and forth. A good roller bag and matching carry-on make a nice gift set. A durable laptop bag or briefcase is another good choice for a graduation gift.
